Couple on the beach in maui getting married

So, you’ve planned your dream wedding in Maui. You’re picturing golden sunsets, palm trees swaying in the breeze, and that perfect “just married” glow. But then—surprise!—the forecast calls for rain. Before you start panicking, let’s take a deep breath. A little (or even a lot) of rain doesn’t mean your wedding is ruined. In fact, some of the most magical weddings I’ve photographed happened under stormy skies.

Here’s what to do if Mother Nature decides to crash your wedding day.

1. First, Don’t Freak Out (Seriously!)

I know, easier said than done. But here’s the thing—Maui’s weather is unpredictable, and rain showers often pass quickly. Even if it looks gloomy in the morning, there’s a good chance you’ll still get sunshine later in the day. And if not? Embrace the moodiness! Overcast skies mean softer light (a photographer’s dream), and rain can make everything feel extra intimate and romantic and (rainbows).

2. Have a Backup Plan (That You Actually Like)

Most venues and planners in Maui know the drill when it comes to weather. Make sure you have a Plan B that still feels special to you. Some options:

  • A covered venue or tent – If you’re getting married at a resort or venue like the Maui Pineapple Chapel, they likely have an indoor or covered option ready to go.
  • A cozy indoor space – If your venue has an indoor area, consider setting it up in a way that still feels intentional and beautiful. String lights, candles, and florals can transform any space.
  • Embrace the rain – If you’re the adventurous type, grab some clear umbrellas and go for it! Some of the most unique, emotion-filled wedding photos happen in the rain.

3. Talk to Your Vendors

Your photographer, planner, and other vendors have likely dealt with rainy wedding days before. Lean on their expertise! I always have a backup plan for photos and can help pivot if needed. Trust the people you’ve hired—they’re pros at making things work, no matter the weather.

4. Clear Umbrellas Are Your Best Friend

If it looks like rain, grab a few clear umbrellas for you and your bridal party. They let in light (so you don’t get weird shadows on your face), and they look gorgeous in photos. Plus, they’re easy to find on Amazon or at local Maui shops.

5. Let Go and Lean Into the Moment

At the end of the day, your wedding isn’t about perfect weather—it’s about celebrating your love. Some of the most unforgettable weddings I’ve photographed weren’t “perfect” in the traditional sense, but they were real, emotional, and full of joy. Dance in the rain, kiss under the stormy sky, and know that you’re making memories that will last forever.

6. Bonus: Rain = Good Luck

If you’re into symbolism, rain on your wedding day is actually considered a sign of good luck. It represents renewal, cleansing, and the start of a fresh chapter. And let’s be real—there’s something kind of poetic about saying your vows as the rain falls around you.

Final Thoughts

Rain on your Maui wedding day isn’t the end of the world—it’s just part of the adventure. With a little flexibility, a solid backup plan, and the right mindset, your day will still be just as beautiful, if not more so. And hey, if it rains? You’ll have one heck of a story to tell.
